In one of the creative writing classes I took at university, we had a particular writing exercise: to write down a conversation we heard somewhere during the day.  It could be anything, from anyone.  It was intended to be entirely random.  It was an interesting exercise, because it forced the writer to listen to the world around them, and the voices in it. In the same sense, every character has their own unique voice that the writer can tap, if they set out to listen.  No two characters speak the same way, or think the same way.  They have different dialects, different accents, different turns of phrase depending on their upbringing.  They s

There's something incredibly intimate about writing.  Not just the steamy, sexy things, but the little things, the quiet things, characters sitting and thinking or having dinner with family or calling up a friend on the phone.  To write something really meaningful -- not necessarily to the world at large, but to me as the writer -- I have to know who I'm writing, very deep down: I need to know where they come from, I need to know their family, their upbringing, their hopes, their dreams, their turn-ons and turn-offs and the things that get them out of bed in the morning and keep them awake at night.  I need to know their hobbies, the secret t

Glad to hear it!! I've been pulling together quite a few new ones, and I have a lot of plans in the works for more...though I really hope I can make up enough of the little guys to go to a convention next year and see how they do. :D
